Weekly Learning Outcomes;
Develop spatial sequence from your site documentation.
Develop the second blog entry which documents and analyses the second week of studio experimentation.
Further research pre-cinematic devices and cinematic spaces, drawing on Giuliana Bruno's text.
Week 1 Session 1.
Context Talk
Contributing to public good
What are the communities that are already at play - who's missing.
What type of sequence am i trying to create? with my cinematic device?
Emphasis on light and shadows/projections and reflections
3 SITE OPTIONS: queens arcade, carpark, imperial lane.
Fort lane was a place of food/trade pipi bed.
Honoring the history whilst taking the future generation into consideration
Maori market which created the food supply for the early settlers (commercial bay)
DigitalNZ - historical context.
Contemporary placemaking
What can we make that's more informed and more inclusive
How to create micro spaces - detailed/small scale project rather than a big-scale project.
Scale of our phone as a cinematic device
Temporary design layered with the old stonework/foundation of the building
a balanced mix of new and original parts
light wells with timber trusses
portals/thresholds which is light coming from above.
creates a series of bays instead of physical partitions
"The texture of time"
Site Visit/Documentation.
Due to the strong winds, I was unable to use my device properly in the outdoor areas of our selected sites. I had to use my extra spatial device to try and capture as much as I could for the preparation of Wednesday's workshop.
Site documentation using photoshop;
Capturing light and movement using multiple photos layered on top of each other.
Week 1 Session 2.
design a palette of textures
think about direction of sun and orientation of site (how far does the sun penetrate fort lane)
how are different temperatures established in the site
rooftop space?
How do surfaces, textures and atmosphere change through the orientation
how exposed is the site when its raining
color palette from photos
Benjamin Work - art on walls in fort lane
Revitalizing and recollecting ancient knowledge into modern design/contemporary aspect
Light and darkness
Jump out & fadeout shots
Projector Workshop.
My site documentation projected;
Further site investigation;
IMPERIAL LANE
beautiful light wells which have a lot of space to work with within them as well.
slightly awkward elevation but can also be an interesting opportunity.
definitely suited for a pop-up event? made me think of designing on behalf of one of the close by bars or restaurants for a pop-up event in imperial lane.
a transitional threshold from fort lane (a smaller street) into queen street which is the main are of the city.
FORT LANE
A little bit inconvenient passage wise. very busy and compact.
Wind tunnel - very very strong winds in fort lane.
QUEENS ARCADE
very tight space.
beautiful ceiling design.
a lot of very old shops which seem to have been there for long time, however there were also a lot of empty shops as well.
very interesting interior spaces within the different shops with a variety of different elevations and round stairs.
PRIVATE CARPARK
A little bit hard to picture as we were unable to visit.
concrete/sturdy structure to build in.
I personally know Fort lane for Seoul night - the Korean bar I often go to drink. I thought that a pop-up event for Seoul night extended out onto Fort Lane and Imperial Lane could be a potential idea. I always love taking my friends to Seoul night to be able to experience the closest thing I can find to real Korean night life. Further extending this space within Seoul night would be something I would be very intrigued into doing.
